Cyrell - The Warrior

The human world is dying, and its last hope to defeat the Siphons has been taken away from them.

I was hoping never to witness what the demons from the Lower Dimensions could unleash upon the innocent, yet I am destined to see it again.

The Siphons who struck first are just scouts, the first wave of an invading force, the cautious tentacles feeling their way around before the monster comes.

Humans are not stupid, and though the magic-hungry demons stay away from big cities and attack only the most vulnerable, their leaders soon notice that something is very wrong.

A colony of homeless—dead within minutes, a remote mountain village—entirely wiped out a week later, the streets of a poor neighborhood covered in lifeless bodies the following day... This all makes humans ask questions and throw accusations at each other. Aliens, bioweapons, super viruses, botched drugs—not even close to what is actually happening. Living in a world where natural laws have ruled their existence for millennia, it’s hard to make them believe in the existence of magic.

They are doomed. And it is the narrow-mindedness of their beliefs and indoctrinations that will finish them off before the Siphons do.

Neighboring countries break centuries of peace, nuclear bomb rhetoric circles all news stations, and lunatic conspiracy theories draw hundreds of thousands to the streets. Riots, looting, fear, war—when facing uncertainty, humans have only done one thing for ages. They resort to violence.

Curfews are everywhere, military patrols are on the streets, and lockdowns are mandated in all major cities. Will all that stop a Siphon? I think not.

More and more Siphons from the Lower Dimensions arrive each day, hungry and curious to taste this new magic. Unable to see more suffering, my men and I secretly build wards around some cities, unseen power-charged sigils that keep the Siphons off for a while, or at least conceal the feast within these towns. We work day and night, keeping the old agreement between the Fae nations to remain hidden and discreet, yet all our efforts will be in vain when the main force arrives.

Humanity is doomed.

And I cannot allow it.

I cannot stand by and watch history repeating itself.

So, I decide to take desperate measures. I leave my second in charge, pat the shiny plates of Cerberus to bid him farewell, and head to Verdant.

To portal straight into the heavy-warded capital of Zahriell is impossible, so I choose a grove nearby. I haven’t walked beneath the Pillars of the Firmament since my youth when our world was different. Verdant hasn’t changed much. The war has grazed only the forests in the south. Yet thousands have met a fate far more terrifying than death, their magic consumed by the Siphons, turning them into mindless ravaging beasts, the zarghouls. They’ve been plaguing the borders of King Zahriell’s domain for a while, yet I don’t encounter any of the foul creatures on my way to the capital.

I raise my hands as soon as I sense the suspicious gazes of the soldiers and the arrowheads pointed at me.
